In this episode, I chat with James Lenhoff -- an author, Certified Financial Planner®, and a fellow life coach -- about how he’s seeking to change the conversation around money. We joked that James is an unflappable life coach ninja, but in all seriousness, he has so much wisdom to share on the importance of an improved money mindset.
We dive into:
• Isolation and shame when it comes to money -- and how to combat it with money communities
• The importance of cross-generational money mentors
• The benefit of having an abundance fund and the three things that get in the way of generosity
• How to teach your kids about money in an authentic, real way
To hear more from James, check out The Rich Life Radio Show and visit the Wealthquest website.
Quotables:
• “It’s great to make mistakes; we just want to be making new ones.”
• “The thing about money is that it is second maybe only to your sex life in terms of awkward things to talk about.”
• “When it comes to money, we all make the same mistakes. The question is, when are we going to make them and how much are they going to cost?”
• “My job isn’t to raise really big kids. My job is to raise grown-ass humans.”
• “I thought I was protecting them. I thought that I was keeping them from having to carry this weight...what I was actually doing was preventing intimacy.”
• “Generosity is the key to living a rich life.”
• “If you give it to them with strings attached...then you’re really not giving it to them, you’re manipulating them...That’s not generosity. That’s control.”

In this solo episode, I’m doing a deep dive (pun fully intended) into the concept of deep work and how it can radically shift the results -- both personally and professionally -- that you’re producing in your life.
At its core, deep work is undistracted, focused blocks of time dedicated to increasing your intellectual, creative, and emotional capacity in order to create new value in the world.
It’s uncomfortable and sometimes painful, but amazingly effective. It forces you to cut out crutches, like constant phone use, but on the other side of it, you’re more focused, more engaged, more present, and more creative.

• Books: Deep Work by Cal Newport and Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Pique Podcast: [Life changing (S1 E12)]
Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
In this solo episode of The Pique Podcast, I mock myself and my overuse of the phrase “life changing.” Jokes aside, I dig into the six understandings that have changed the trajectory of my life.
I pull from many universal teachings, that I’ve learned by way of Eckhart Tolle, Jess Lively, Brooke Castillo, Cal Newport, and the Quakers.
1. The Power of Now
2. Travel (especially further understanding what I can and cannot control)
3. Intuitive work
4. The self-coaching model
5. Deep work
6. The belief that we all have a light within us
I firmly believe that I was introduced to each of these things in the order that I needed them in my own life. They all layer on top of each other to form a pretty freaking empowering worldview. Happy listening.

Tuesday Aug 20, 2019
Tuesday Aug 20, 2019
In this episode, I talk to Sara Rose Whaley, also known as my sister, about infertility, body image, marriage, relationships, life transformations, intuition, and our 20-something antics.
Specifically, we talk about the platinum rule, the power of saying “I don’t know what to say,” seasons of relationships, and what not to say to pregnant women.
Quotables:
• “I would like to think that it was God’s voice...It was just desperation and horniness.”
• “When you’re single, everyone’s like ‘You need to be 100% happy being single.’ No you don’t. You don’t need to change your dreams and pretend that those are not your dreams. I think what people are really saying…”
• “Be in the pain and do shit anyway.”
• “I didn’t know that I was to be trusted.”
Other quotes mentioned:
• “‘Resentment is like taking poison and waiting for the other person to die.’” - Unknown

In this solo episode, I talk about the experience of creating and launching a podcast, and how it’s provided me with “another f*cking growth opportunity.”
Using The Pique Podcast as a case study, I dig into:
• My failed podcast launch in 2014 and how failing is the process of success, not the opposite of success
• The concept of practicing discomfort on purpose and being willing to be with any emotions, even the negative ones
• My mission to continue to show up whole -- in integrity -- on the podcast and in life
• Getting to a place where I’m proud of what I’ve created with this podcast, whether or not people give me words of affirmation
• The idea of strategic byproducts, the awesome “unanticipated side-effects” of doing something big and new in your life
• “Post-mortems” of each published podcast episode -- a quick summary of the episodes, the feedback I’ve received on each one, and updates to my thinking about the content within each episode
At the end of the episode, I give you four questions to help guide you on your own journey toward a big goal or creation in your own life.

Pique Podcast: [Practicing compassionate communication with Pat Bevan (S1 E9)]
Tuesday Aug 06, 2019
Tuesday Aug 06, 2019
In this episode, I chat with Pat Bevan, a certified trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication, about nonviolent communication -- NVC for short. We talk about what defines nonviolent communication and its benefit: Increasing the likelihood of others willingly contributing to our well-being.
We discuss recognizing with compassion those who commit physical violence, the four ways that we disconnect from each other, how to use the “observation, feeling, need, request” framework in everyday communication, and the benefits of self-empathy, empathy, and radical honesty.
Quotables:
• “I just would so much want people to approach all beings with compassion, rather than with judgment and blame.”
• “What you say is a reflection of what’s going on inside of you.”
• “My sense of being able to care for myself has gotten so much stronger as a result of NVC.”
• “We are responsible for our feelings…No one makes us feel a certain way. They might stimulate a thought in us, and that thought makes us feel a certain way.”

In this episode, I answer several questions from listeners about how I’m reducing my waste, what books I recommend, how I shape my mornings, what quotes that resonate with me, and my advice for knowing how much time and energy to dedicate to new projects in your life (even if you’re not a business owner).
The five questions:
1. Given the state of the environment, what are you doing to be more environmentally conscious?
2. What are your top 5 non-fiction book recommendations?
3. What does your morning routine look like?
4. What’s a quote that you’re loving recently?
5. One of my biggest struggles is deciding how much time to dedicate to new projects when I know I need to invest to see the returns, but also it distracts from earning in the here and now.

In this episode, I chat with Erica and Jordan of The Worth Project about the three financial questions that changed their trajectory, our biggest money mistakes (which include Bitcoin, constant late fees, and “I deserve it” syndrome), and how to bring your money in line with your values, especially in a partnership.
We also touch on minimalism, food waste reduction, student loans, and their favorite financial books.
At the end of the episode, they give two practical, action-oriented calls to action for aligning your money with your values.
To get in touch with Erica and Jordan, visit The Worth Project and be sure to hop on their email list. (Erica’s emails are one of the few I read religiously.)

In this solo episode, I chat about my recent decision to re-evaluate my drinking habits -- and how I ended up approximately 85% more sober.
I break down how drinking had become a habitual, unconscious action in my life, the societal messages that made me rethink my drinking, how I’ve dealt with cutting back, and the challenges it’s brought up for me.
I dive into how you can begin to explore more sobriety if it piques your interest, but a quick note that even if you’re not interested in cutting back on drinking, you might find the episode valuable. Fundamentally, it’s about bringing awareness to any net-negative action that you do unconsciously in your own life (like overeating, overspending, or binge-watching TV) and how to go about changing it.
